Fundraiser for Victims of 9/11 at Binney Art Gallery
In response to the 10th anniversary of 9/11, the Fine & Performing Arts Department wanted to honor the legacy and victims of 9/11 through our students and community.
All of the visual arts teachers encouraged their students to respond in various personal ways to the event and legacy of 9/11. Though difficult for some to express the magnitude of this catastrophe due to the extent of their own living memory, some 75 students responded on 10" x 10" squares to fill the entire gallery.
On November 12 and 13, the Academy Players, under the direction of Michael Dziura, created an original script based on over 1500 pages of testimonials, accounts, and verbal responses to 9/11. The production, said Dziura, "tried, in our own humble way, to utilize the traditional tools of the theater - body, voice, and storytelling."
The Fine & Performing Arts Department is producing a hardcover book, which will be available for $50, featuring student art work from this show as well as excerpts and images from the Academy Players' original play, "9/11 Reflections and Accounts". The money earned from sales of the book will go directly to 9/11 support groups. FPA T-shirts (designed by Allen Fu '11) and Dance Posters will also be available for purchase.
