Students completed research and drawings in the computer lab. Each of them printed out five images of totemic forms. Using bits and pieces of the five images they created an original design/drawing inspired by the research. The installation concept was also presented in written form: Life, death and rebirth, transformation, and how we are all interconnected.
Next, all the individual concepts were presented, and over several sessions the group brainstormed in search of symbols, ideas, and overlapping concepts culminating in the selection of one concept to initiate the fabrication process.
Site-specific to Binney Gallery, the installation is designed for a short exhibition, with all the elements built and assembled in the gallery.
Among the found objects used for the project were trash, shredded paper, aluminum trunks from China, plastic wrap, and tree branches. The purpose is the creation of a gigantic tree symbolizing, life, growth, and rebirth. Also present are several cardboard figures symbolizing the importance of leadership and of the individual.
