Ben Marcus went from ‘oh no’ to a no-no
One game after giving up a walk-off grand slam, the senior right-hander fired a no-hitter to lead the Wilbraham & Monson Academy Baseball team to a 7-0 victory over visiting Millbrook School Saturday, April, 7.
“From the first inning, the whole team was playing behind me,” Marcus said. “We’ve been working hard in practice all week. I felt good all game.”
And Marcus pitched great all game. He struck out seven and walked four in his first start of the season for the Titans (1-1).
Just as importantly, Marcus shook off a rough relief appearance in the team’s opener against Williston Northampton School.
“The coaches, right after the Williston game, told me I had to shake it and get right on to Millbrook,” said Marcus, 18. “I did that well and it felt good.”
Marcus didn’t know he had a no-hitter until the final inning. The news, though, didn’t shake the four-year varsity player.
“It pumped me up,” Marcus said. “I was facing the bottom of their order. I felt good going into the last inning. A guy got on base, I struck a guy out and then we turned a double play to end the game.
“It was awesome. In my four years here, I’ve never seen a team play so well behind me. I was pitching well and I felt good. It felt special.”
