WMA's Julia Bell '12, Marissa McDermott '12 to compete in all-star lax game

The front end and back end of Wilbraham & Monson Academy's Girls Lacrosse team will compete alongside the best prep players in the region Sunday.

Forward Julia Bell '12 and goalie Marissa McDermott '12 will compete at the Connie Walkwitz NEPSWLA All-Star Game at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester. The game begins at 11 a.m.

The participants were selected based on votes from opposing coaches.

“It's exciting because it's my senior year,” Marissa said. “This will be my final high school game. It's an honor to be elected by opposing coaches – that's the best part of this. After every game opposing coaches usually say 'Good job goalie', but it's awesome to be selected by the coaches.”

Marissa will be competing in her first all-star game, while Julia competed in the 2011 event at Harvard University.

“Last year it was a big honor because I was only a junior,” Julia said. “It was a lot of fun. It was the best of the best. It was fun to play and see everyone. And I got to see a lot of girls from my summer team so it was really nice.”

Julia and Marissa have played nicely all season for the 10-2-1 Titans. For the second season in a row, Julia has led the team in scoring; Marissa has served as an exceptional goaltender, as well as a vocal and emotional leader for WMA.

“Julia did awesome,” said Marissa, who will play lacrosse next season at the University of New Haven. “She was our leading scorer, and last year she was our leading scorer, too. She always finds a way to score in a game when we need her to.”

“I'm glad Marissa is getting to play,” said Julia, a Mount Holyoke College-bound attacker who owns 110 career goals in two seasons at WMA. “She's gotten a lot better since last year. I think it's a big opportunity for her to show everyone her skills and that she's progressed this year.”
