Girls' Varsity Tennis: The Global team
The Wilbraham & Monson Academy Girls' Varsity Tennis team sure took on the school's motto: The Global School.
Players from six countries competed on the 2012 team, which went 3-7 and set itself up nicely for a successful 2013. The majority of the team was from countries outside the United States.
“This was a great tennis season,” Heather Little '13 said. “Everyone was so nice. We had a great representation of the countries. We had China, Angola, Japan, Germany, Venezuela and America.”
And WMA will have three of its top players back for next season: Heather, Sarah Goolishian '13 and Molly Socha '15.
“Sarah and I are looking to bring it our senior year, and Molly, as a freshman, will be great for three more years,” Heather said. “She's improved so much this year and she's such an athlete. I think she'll keep improving. She'll be a great tennis player by the time she's done high school.”
The 2012 Titans had a big group of newcomers to varsity, but certainly not a newcomer at the coaching spot in Jay Hamilton, who keeps the mood light at practice and matches.
“Playing for Jay is like playing for your favorite uncle,” Sarah said. “You always want to work your hardest for him. You want to do your best. It's hard not to like Jay.
“It was a really good team because all the girls had a good relationship with each other. It was a good, overall bonding team.”
