WMA's trip to Vietnam, June 8-23, is in partnership with Westfield State University.

Participants will learn about the country in comparison to how the country is portrayed in American media. Among the planned activities, the group will meet with U.S. veterans who are helping Vietnamese victims of land mines that still exist along the countryside.

June 16 Photo Updates

June 16: This morning, we took a boat ride down the Perfume River, and visited the Pagoda of Thien Mu (the center of Buddhism in Hue), the tomb of Emperor Minh Mang, and the Citadel of Hue (one of the oldest imperial fortresses in Vietnam, which suffered severe damage in both the first French war and the Tet Offensive of 1968). This was our first truly mild day (only 75 degrees), and despite the rain, everyone was in good spirits.

This is one of Austin Little and Will Awad watching a young student learning to embroider at the Vietnam Friendship Village. The Friendship Village was built by American veteran, George Mizo between 1988 and 1998, as a place to which veterans who had been exposed to Agent Orange, and children born with Agent Orange related disabilities could go for medical care and vocational training. Mizo died in 2004 from Agent Orange related illness, but volunteers continue his work in Hanoi.

Teresa Kennedy and Eva Landers pedaling a swan boat in West Lake, the largest lake in Hanoi. This lake is also significant because it happens to be the place where John McCain crashed his plane in 1967. His crash and capture are commemorated with a monument that stands by the lake.
