Overview
Wilbraham & Monson Academy has maintained a quality tradition of academic, athletic and civic excellence throughout Western Massachusetts and the Pioneer Valley. Offering a “Global Vision” of academic achievement, WMA attracts the very best and the very brightest student-athletes from around the globe. The 2013 Titan lacrosse team will include these high achievers.
WMA lacrosse goes back many years. With deep respect for this Native American and First Nation game, WMA lacrosse has set a standard of excellence throughout the 80’s and 90’s with annual NESPEC championships. Coach Bill McCollough built a formidable program that continues to be respected and admired throughout Western Massachusetts.
Located just East of Springfield, Mass., the WMA athletic facilities are world class and state-of-the-art. Titan lacrosse players are housed in a new Athletic Complex that includes a swimming pool, hi-tech weight center, athletic training complex, a large gymnasium, an all-weather track and a new all turf athletic field. The NCAA regulation turf field was inaugurated with the 2012 lacrosse season.
Head Coach Phil Roland ( UMASS '75’ & '77), along with Assistant Coaches Mike MacDonald (Syracuse '08, Lemoyne '10) and Jeff Vartabedian ( Springfield '88) have attracted a quality group of young leaders. This coaching staff brings over 40 years of combined coaching and teaching experience to the program.
2013 Preview
The 2013 Titan team will be led onto the playing field by Captain Andrew Mordasky '13. A four year starter, Andrew will anchor one of the very best attack lines in the league. Newcomers Spencer Marochinni '16 and Harry Kroessler '15 are expected to lead the league in goals and assists. Spencer is a top player out of Connecticut and Harry was a team and league leader in New Jersey.
John Tierney '15, a unanimous All-League midfield, dominated midfield play and registered a 72% face-off success rate in 2012. He will have Casey Keeley '14 and Devin Salmon '14 as wingman. This combination offers maturity, experience and excellent offense/defense capabilities. Casey returned with maturity and a great dodge and shot while Devin joined the team out of Staten Island, N.Y.
The defense will be led by goalies Colby Hamwey '15 and Mike Callahan '14. These great student-athletes will take charge of an experienced defense trio that will include Jeb Brown '15, Mitch Pastore '14 and Jackson FrenchRobitaille '14. Brandan Butcher '13, Caleb Gillette '14, Jacob Wood '15 and newcomer James Halloran '16 will provide quality play at the long-pole position.
Coming off the bench and challenging for playing time will be Cory Walton '15, Mike O’Donnell '16, Cormac Garvey '13, Steven Kane '17 and Joseph Liu '15. Newcomers Matthew Guerin, Tyler Dion '15 and Julian Santos '15 will contribute quality minutes.
Coming off of a hugely successful winter league, the 2013 Titans are ready to challenge the league and will work hard to bring respect and integrity to their WMA community. All games are played on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons and we look forward to visiting with parents, faculty, parents, relatives and the entire community at all of our home games. Please stop by and see the "fastest game on two feet” played with honor and respect for this GREAT Native American and First Nation game.
Our team goal for the 2013 season is to challenge for the WMA Trustees Cup that requires excellence as follows: winning record, academic achievement, sportsmanship, team spirit and leadership off the field. These ideals best exemplify all that is right with WMA and best defines the quality student-athlete that we wish to attract.
