Wilbraham & Monson Academy has maintained a quality tradition of academic, athletic and civic excellence throughout Western Massachusetts and the Pioneer Valley. Offering a “Global Vision” of academic achievement, WMA attracts the very best and the very brightest student-athletes from around the globe. The 2013 Titan lacrosse team will include these high achievers.
WMA lacrosse goes back many years. With deep respect for this Native American and First Nation game, WMA lacrosse has set a standard of excellence throughout the 80’s and 90’s with annual NESPEC championships. Coach Bill McCollough built a formidable program that continues to be respected and admired throughout Western Massachusetts.
Located just East of Springfield, Mass., the WMA athletic facilities are world class and state-of-the-art. Titan lacrosse players are housed in a new Athletic Complex that includes a swimming pool, hi-tech weight center, athletic training complex, a large gymnasium, an all-weather track and a new all turf athletic field. The NCAA regulation turf field was inaugurated with the 2012 lacrosse season.
Head Coach Phil Roland ( UMASS '75’ & '77), along with Assistant Coaches Mike MacDonald (Syracuse '08, Lemoyne '10) and Jeff Vartabedian ( Springfield '88) have attracted a quality group of young leaders. This coaching staff brings over 40 years of combined coaching and teaching experience to the program.
The 2014 WMA Lacrosse team will be led onto the field by captains Jackson FrenchRobitaille '14 and Casey Keeley '14. Jackson is a four-year starter and was a 1st Team All-League defenseman in 2013. Casey is a third-year starter and earned 1st Team All-League as a midfield. John Tierney '15 earned All-League 1st Team for the second straight year and broke a long standing WMA single-season scoring record with 68 goals and 56 assists. John is a dominant face-off performer and has committed to attend UMass upon graduation. This line is anchored by Casey on the left and Devin Salmon '14 on the right wing. Devin is a fast and skilled two-way player and received All-League Honorable Mention recognition.
Newcomer Zack Mann '17, a highly sought after student-athlete, will be first off the bench and WMA will have depth at the midfield line for the first time in many years, with Kieran Summers '14, Joseph Lee '14, Julian Santos '15, Tyler Dion '15 and Mike O’Donnell '16. Newcomers Drew Morrison '16, Kevin Laurita '14, Mick Rouette '14 and Jacob Wood '15 will round out the midfield position.
The attack line of Harrison Kroessler '14, Spencer Maroccchini '16, and newcomers Joe Tierney '17 and Christian Paley '15 will continue their winning ways. Harrison and Spencer earned All- League Honorable Mention as first-year players for the Titans. Cory Walton '15 and Andrew Nagle '18 will see a lot of action.
A quick, tenacious and experienced group of defensemen will return for the 2014 campaign. Jackson will anchor this lineup, which will include Mitch Pastore '14, Jeb Brown '15 and newcomer James Sabatino '16. Unanimous All League 1st Team selection Colby Hamwey '15 will maintain the goalie position. Mikey Callahan '14 will see playing time in goal as the season progresses. Alexander Strange '17 and James Halloran '16 will receive quality time and are potential LSM players.
This group, working as a team, finished the 2013 season with a 9-5 record and earned a semifinal playoff berth, losing to Gunnery School. In so doing, the team won the League Bodkin Sportsmanship Award for the second year in a row. The 2013 squad won the prestigious WMA Trustees Cup, awarded annually to the one team that best exemplifies academic excellence, a winning record, team and league sportsmanship, community service and a positive attitude throughout the campus. These qualities best define the student-athlete WMA wishes to bring to the Wilbraham campus. It is not about lacrosse . . . it is about becoming a GREAT PERSON!
Coaches Jeff Vartabedian (Springfield College), Mike MacDonald (Syracuse University) and Head Coach Phil Roland (University of Massachusetts) have a combined 50 years of coaching experience at the youth, high school and collegiate level. With the support of his staff, Coach Roland was recognized with the league's Coach of the Year honor. This award is shared with Coach V (defense) and Coach Mac (offense). Without their love of the game and passion for the student-athlete, team success in 2013 would not have been achieved. The 2013-14 Titan Lacrosse Team will work hard to be GREAT: Gratitude, Respect, Enthusiasm, Attitude and Teamwork will be the foundation for any success we achieve as a team.
