Barry M. Maloney, Vice President of Student Affairs, Westfield State College WMA Prize Day Speaker
For nearly two decades Vice President of Student Affairs
Barry M. Maloney has served the students, faculty, and administration of
Westfield State College in a number of key positions. After coming to the
college in 1991 to assume the position of Residence Hall Director, he was
promoted to Assistant Director of Career Services, coordinating all of the
college’s student field experience programs.
As Executive Assistant to former President Frederick W.
Woodward, Mr. Maloney provided leadership as the primary liaison for the Office
of the President and assisted in the development of the college’s Master’s in Public Administration program and in the
college’s preparation for its successful 2002 NEASC accreditation.
When President Woodward retired in 2004, he was named
Interim President, preceding the appointment of President Vicky L. Carwein. At
that time he became Vice President of Advancement and College Relations,
overseeing fund-raising, marketing, and community, government, and alumni
relations.
When President Carwein stepped down from office in 2002, Mr.
Maloney once again served as Interim President until Evan S. Dobelle became the
college’s nineteenth President in 2008.
For the past two years, he has been Vice President of Student Affairs.
Over the years, Mr. Maloney has taught courses in career
development for the Department of Psychology, and was an instructor in
Westfield State’s First Year Experience program. He also developed and led
diversity training for the campus.
A native of Springfield, Massachusetts, Mr. Maloney
graduated from the University of Maine at Orono with a degree in political
science and public management, and a master’s degree in public administration. During his college years, he worked as
an aide for public officials including former Springfield mayor, Richard E.
Neal, who is now a US Congressman.
Mr. Maloney’s community work has included service as a water
commissioner for the City of Westfield, as a coach for area youth basketball
programs, and as a board member of the Amelia Park Children’s Museum and the
Westfield Chapter of the American Red Cross. He currently serves on the board
of the Westfield Boys and Girls Club.
A resident of Westfield, Mr. Maloney and his wife Laura have
three children. Laura is a graduate of Westfield State College, as is Mr.
Maloney’s father, John F. Maloney.
Finally, Mr. Maloney is a 1985 graduate of Wilbraham &
Monson Academy, and his father John is a 1960 graduate of Monson Academy.
