On May 28 following Prize Day, alumni, parents,
students and friends gathered to celebrate the
WMA Campus Center renovation
kickoff. Director of Alumni & Development Don Nicholson started
the proceedings by reading a citation from the House of Representatives
commemorating the day which was sent to the Academy by State
Representative Angelo Puppolo.
Mike Flynn, Chair
of the WMA Board of Trustees Buildings and Grounds Committee, was joined
on stage by fellow trustees Krista Hanson and Kent Pecoy. The committee
has spent countless volunteer hours planning the construction project.
Mike thanked the parents for stepping up and raising $500,000; more
money than any other parent group in the history of the Academy. “The
parents at WMA saw this as a need for our school and they stepped up and
made this project possible. Starting the first day of school this fall,
our students will have a brand new facility.”
Deborah
Joffray, President of the WMA Parents’ Association thanked the parents
who served on the Association Board, the committees which coordinated
the special fundraising events throughout the year and the members of
the Campus Center Steering Committee, the group that spearheaded the
major gifts effort. Deb gave special thanks to Parents’ Association Vice
President Jeannine Little for all her support during the past two
years.
Next it was time to recognize the students
who gave input into the design of the project. Jacqueline Smith ’11,
President of the WMA Student Government, spoke on behalf of the
students. She was joined on stage by members of both the WMA Student
Government and Blake Middle School Student Council. You can read
Jackie’s speech here.
Mr. LaBrecque closed the activities by thanking all who participated for
their support. He gave special recognition to friends of the Academy
Pres and Helen Blake, who attended the celebration. Mr. LaBrecque
remarked that many years ago, Mr. Blake had donated booths and seats
from Friendly Ice Cream to the Academy for use in the Spa and thanked
him for being on hand to celebrate with us.
