Gary Cook selected to participate in grading of AP U.S. History exams

Wilbraham & Monson Academy AP U.S. History teacher Gary Cook participated in the College Board's Annual AP Reading in U.S. History at the Kentucky Convention Center in Louisville June 1-7.

Cook was one of 1,200 readers to evaluate more than three million AP U.S. History exams.

“There's nothing like it,” said Mr. Cook, who was selected from a pool of applicants from throughout the country to grade the AP exams for a third consecutive year. “You're in a convention ballroom with 1,200 people from around the country who all love U.S. History and who all teach at a variety of levels, from full college professors to graduate students to high school teachers. It's just an amazing intellectual experience.”

Sitting at tables of eight, Mr. Cook and the other teachers read and graded exams from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

“You look around the room and they're all doing it, so you get caught in the flow and the momentum,” Mr. Cook said. “It's a marathon. You grade exams from all over the country. It's grueling, taxing, and there are no shortcuts.”

Along with grading the exams, Mr. Cook enjoyed a lecture from guest speaker Gordon Wood, who's regarded as an expert on the Revolutionary War. Mr. Cook, who has taught at WMA since 1979, also learned how the AP exam is made, “so in one sense it's very personally rewarding because it's intellectually invigorating, and at the end of the day it helps me serve the students who go to school at Wilbraham & Monson Academy. I get a better sense on how to prepare them.”
