WMA Girls' Lax enjoys historic season

After winning its opener, the Wilbraham & Monson Academy Girls' Varsity Lacrosse team lost its second game of the season.

That loss, however, not only showed how good the 2012 team was, but how good it could become.

And the Titans turned out to be good . . . really good.

WMA enjoyed one of its best seasons in the history of the lacrosse program, going 11-2-1 and stamping itself as one of the top prep teams in the region.

“I thought it was a very successful season,” Julia Bell '12 (photo, right) said. “We beat a lot of teams we didn't beat last year, or we held the game closer this year. We set a lot of goals for ourselves and we beat all of them, and that was nice to see, especially senior year.”

The Titans had a six-game winning streak during the middle of the season, beat Suffield Academy 10-9 in overtime on the morning of the prom, and capped the season by outscoring their opposition 50-11 in three wins.

The turning point, though, came in mid-April, with WMA falling to the Williston Northampton School 9-3.

“I definitely started to realize we were good during the Williston game,” Carly Cronin '13 said. “Last year we lost 17-2, or something like that, and this year it was 3-1 at halftime and we only lost by six. That's when I realized we could compete with these really good teams.”

“Our season went surprisingly well,” Marissa McDermott '12 (photo, bottom) said. “It was a big step up from last year, and next year I think the team can pick it up and have an even better season than we had this year.”

The 2013 team is lined up for another excellent season. WMA graduated just three starters, and will return both impact and role players.

“The junior class is going to keep it strong,” Marissa said. “I don't have any doubt that they're going to lose any momentum.”

Julia finished her brilliant two-year career with 115 goals, and was also named a McScholar Athlete for her excellence on the field and in the classroom. Julia and Marissa played in the league all-star game at Holy Cross May 20.

“The all-star game was really fun,” Julia said. “It was a lot better than last year. There was more talent. I played with a whole new set of girls than I played with last year. It was a lot of fun. It was higher competition and we won.”
