Christina Wakefield '14 commits to Boston University

Christina Wakefield '14 is heading to the biggest city in New England, and she's taking her soccer gear with her.

Christina, who scored 25 goals last season as a sophomore for Wilbraham & Monson Academy, has verbally committed to attend and play soccer at Boston University.

“B.U. felt right. I wanted to be in a big city so that's why I chose Boston,” said Christina, who can officially sign to become a Terrier next summer.

“This feels awesome. I have all that pressure off of me. When I go to a soccer game next year, I won't have to worry about college coaches watching me. This is absolutely amazing.”

Christina was B.U.'s top recruit from the class of 2014. The honor roll student plans to major in the biomedical or biochemical field.

“Christina Wakefield committing to Boston University is an honor for the program and a tremendous opportunity for her to play at the Division I level,” said WMA Girls' Soccer Coach Don Nicholson. “She was the No. 1 recruit for (B.U. Coach) Nancy Feldman. She thinks Christina's upside is tremendous and she will be a great addition to the school athletically and academically.

“This is something Wilbraham & Monson can be very proud of: to send one of our top players, a tremendous athlete and one of the top soccer players we've had in years, to a Division I program at the end of her sophomore year.”

B.U. claimed the America East Conference in 2011. The Terriers, which set a school record with 14 consecutive wins, beat Harvard University in the first round of the NCAA Division I tournament before losing to Wake Forest.

Christina competed at the national championship for the Elite Club National League in late-June in Chicago. She's playing for Western Mass. Extreme in the Women's Division of the Pioneer Valley Summer Soccer League during the summer in preparation for her junior season at WMA.
