Scott Bicknell '14 powers summer team to regional baseball tournament
Wilbraham & Monson Academy's Scott Bicknell '14 found himself in a hitting groove last week, and he'll soon find himself in one of the biggest baseball tournaments in the northeast.
Scott led his summer baseball team – the Springfield Shox – to the Mickey Mantle state title in a double-elimination tournament in Springfield.
Scott batted .737 for the tournament, going 14 for 19. During a stretch of 14 at bats, he had 13 hits and one walk. He finished with 12 singles, a double, triple, five walks and 10 runs scored. He didn't strike out in 24 at bats.
“I got a couple hits and I started feeling it,” Scott said. “I started gaining confidence and I got a couple more hits. It was a lot of fun. A lot of hits always feel good.”
From his catcher position, the 6-foot, 200-pounder was also invaluable, throwing out nine base runners.
The Shox advanced to the North Atlantic Mickey Mantle Regional Tournament, which will be held in Waterbury, Conn., July 19-22. Scott's first game will be against a team from Ontario, Canada. The tournament winner will advance to the Mickey Mantle World Series in Texas July 31-Aug. 4.
“The whole team was excited to win the state title because we're going to regionals,” Scott said. “I'm excited because I've never played in a regional tournament.”
