3 compete in swimming at Bay State Games for WMA

When Mia Konstantakos '13 is walking around the Wilbraham & Monson Academy campus in the fall wearing her navy blue 2012 Bay State Games jacket, one thing should be kept in mind: she earned it.

Mia placed fourth in the 100-meter backstroke in the 16-18 division of the Bay State Games at Harvard University in Cambridge July 14. The top four finishers in each event received jackets, which are quite the buzz for Bay State Games participants.

“I was happy with the swim and getting the jacket,” said Mia, who was racing at the Bay State Games for the first time. “It was great.

“I'm in the middle of my hard workouts for my summer team so I'm not in prime physical condition for racing. My team just started it's taper now. Going into Bay State Games I just wanted to place in the top four and get the jacket – that was my main drive. It wasn't my fastest time for the long course but I was happy with placing because that's what I went to do.”

Mia also reached the finals of the 50 and 100 freestyles.

Meg Harrington '15 just missed earning a jacket. Meg got touched out in the 100 free, finishing fifth in the 13-15 age group. She also took seventh in the 50 free.

“In my 50 I was pretty happy, but I was bummed in the 100 because I was so close to getting a jacket and getting fourth place,” said Meg, who was also swimming at her first Bay State Games and swam her best times in both events. “It was a very competitive age group, the 13-15 age group. I thought I had a competitive advantage, being 15. But there were a lot of fast girls.”

Mia and Meg's coach, Dan Moran, was the big winner among the WMA participants. Competing in the men's 19-34 division, Coach Moran won all four of the events in which he competed: 100 and 200 butterfly, and 400 and 800 free. He obliterated the field in each event.
