Maddy McCloskey '15 to race in 3 elite swim meets throughout east coast
During the 2011-12 swim season for Wilbraham & Monson Academy, Maddy McCloskey '15 made a point to focus more on swimming. She wanted to see what she could do.
This summer, Maddy is doing a lot, traveling to three elite swim meets all along the east coast in July.
Maddy leaves July 20 for the YMCA National Team Championships in Atlanta, Ga., where she will compete with her summer swim team throughout the week. On July 27, at Harvard University in Cambridge, Maddy will swim at the New England Age Group Championships. The following day, for the week, she will be in Richmond, Va., for the New England Team Zone Championships.
All three events are sanctioned by USA Swimming, which is the governing body for swimming in the country.
“I'm really excited to go to Georgia,” Maddy said. “It's going to be a great meet.”
And Maddy has turned herself into a great swimmer. She won 100 backstroke at a New England Qualifier July 15 at Springfield College.
“It felt good to look at the papers and see that I've won,” said Maddy, referring to winning the race at Springfield College. “I've never won an event at a USA Swimming meet.”
Maddy will compete in the 50 and 100 back in Georgia. When she returns, she'll swim in multiple events at Harvard, where she'll be seeded in the top 10 in the 13-14 division in the 100 back. She'll race the 100 and 200 back in Virginia.
“Last swim season I decided I wanted to see what I could end up being a couple years from now,” she said. “I'm a lot better than I was a year ago.”
Maddy helped the Titans win the NEPSAC Division III title last season, taking third in the 500 free and 200 Individual Medley.
