WMA Girls' Soccer wins summer soccer league title
Was Saturday a sign of things to come for the Wilbraham & Monson Academy Girls' Soccer team?
The Titans sure hope so.
After claiming the regular season title, WMA won the Pioneer Valley Summer Soccer League championship with a 3-1 victory over Granby at Lusitano Stadium in Ludlow.
Carly Cronin '13 scored twice and assisted on a goal by Molly Socha '15 for WMA, which repeated as the league champion.
“I thought we had a good game,” said Carly, who was also named the league's MVP. “We stepped up to the ball, took advantage of our outside halfbacks, got it wide, broke the team down with through balls, and took advantage of our speed so we could break them down. It worked out for us in the end.”
The Titans carried the majority of the play. Carly scored in the first half to put WMA ahead 1-0, then scored again in the second half for a 2-0 lead. Granby scored to pull within one, but Molly scored in the final 10 minutes to clinch the league title.
“It was was an exciting event and it was good to win it again,” said Molly Moran, who dominated the play at midfield. “We all came together and fought our hardest. It was well-deserved.”
The Titans return a very experienced and strong group for the 2012 prep season and are eager to begin.
“It's really exciting going into the season,” Carly said. “We're looking forward to getting the team together for captains practices and taking it from there.”
“All of us playing together, especially for the new kids on the team, it got them into everything,” Molly said. “It got us in shape and we all know exactly what our job is on the field. We got to play together and get ready for the season.”
