Activities
The WMA Middle School afternoon program engages students in a variety
of activities. In addition to competitive athletic options for both
boys and girls, the following opportunities are available to middle
school students.
Student Council
• Meets during Activities Block on Thursday.
•
Elected officials involved with the Middle School Director in advisory
capacity associated with the governance of the school and the planning
of extracurricular and social activities.
GEMS (Girls Engaging in Math and Science)
• Meets during Activities Block on Thursday.
• Works to connect girls with potential careers in math and science.
Write Now
• Produces a publication showcasing writing talents of middle school students
Yearbook Committee
• Works on photography, layout, design, and theme
• Produces a bound yearbook for middle school students at end of the academic year
ToyChallenge
• National competition developed by Sally Ride Science and Smith College’s Picker Engineering Program
• Engages middle school-age students in engineering and research and development
• Involves creating a new game or toy to submit for the national competition
Lego Robotics Team
• Regional competition using Lego Mindstorms NXT Robot
• Builds a robot to perform specific tasks outlined in competition
Rube Goldberg Competition
• Regional competition involving engineering, designing, and building a Rube Goldberg contraption
• Sponsored by the Fay School and MIT Museum
