Sean McGrath '07, WMA graduates win summer soccer league championship
Boys' Soccer Assistant Coach Sean McGrath '07 and a cast of Wilbraham & Monson Academy graduates won the Pioneer Valley Summer Soccer League championship Friday night when the Lusitano Whites defeated Villa Napoletana 3-0 in the men's final.
Along with Coach McGrath, the winning team included Kevin Pereira '08, Dave Lawrence '11 and Ben Premo '05. Colin Cook '04 played for Villa Napoletana. The game was played at Lusitano Stadium in Ludlow before a crowd of 1,000 fans.
“Lusitano Stadium always has a good draw for that summer league,” said Coach McGrath, who has played in the PVSSL for six seasons. “It's just a men's adult summer league, and sometimes it's guys who are working and they are out there to have fun. But come playoff time, that stadium draws a good crowd and players are there to win.
“The last two years we've won the championship. We've taken it seriously and we haven't lost a game either. We're 32-0-2.”
Coach McGrath started at left back, while Kevin played forward and Dave right back. Ben was injured. Kevin was named the championship game's MVP.
“Kevin had a great playoffs,” Coach McGrath said. “He scored three times in the playoffs, including two in the final.”
