Carly Cronin '13 wins MVP of summer soccer league
Carly Cronin ’13 received a nice bonus Aug. 4.
Moments after the Wilbraham & Monson Academy Girls’ Soccer team won the Pioneer Valley Summer Soccer League title, Carly was named the league’s Most Valuable Player for the 2012 season.
“It was a good accomplishment and made me feel good – things like that,” Carly said. “But even with that, I could not have done it without the help of my teammates. I definitely thank them, too.”
Carly scored twice and assisted on the game-turning goal in the final 10 minutes as WMA beat Granby 3-1 in the championship. The Titans, which included newcomers and returners to the program, also won the regular season title.
“A lot of the girls stepped it up during the season, especially some of the underclassmen,” Carly said. “I’ve definitely seen improvement in them. I think a lot of the girls worked as hard as they could because there were numerous games where we played with seven people, but we stuck through it all and pulled it out.
“It was a very good step for us. It boosted the confidence of a lot of the girls. It’s just another step toward the fall season.”
The Titans are loaded with talent going into the 2012 Girls’ Soccer season. Experienced and talented, Carly and the team have high hopes. The team is playing three scrimmages and built a challenging regular season schedule in preparation for the NEPSAC Class B tournament.
“I think it’s going to be a good season,” Carly said. “We added another A school and we’re up to the challenge. We’re going to work as hard as possible and see where that leads us but I think we have a good shot this year.”
Carly, coming off a trimester where she earned highest honors, is being highly recruited for soccer and lacrosse, including at the Division I level. The 5-foot-2 forward has Fairfield University, Bowdoin College, Bryant University, College of the Holy Cross, Skidmore College and Bentley University as her top choices.
