Middle School Blog

Dear WMA MS Families,

Summer math help sessions are going well.  I have been working with students in Room 4 and we spend an hour or so keeping our math skills sharp so, come the end of summer, we can dive right in to our math curriculum and not have to spend the start of a new school year reviewing what we learned last year!  The students working with me are about halfway through the summer math assignment with two more sessions scheduled before our summer math help program ends.

I received a lot of information from Nature's Classroom this week, some of which I can share with you now.  Nature's Classroom's web site is:

The particular location we will be visiting is Silver Bay in New York located about 60 miles north of Albany.   Our school has been going to Silver Bay for several years and our students often rate their week at Nature's Classroom as one of the highlights of their entire middle school experience!

We will be at Silver Bay from Monday, September 10 to Friday, September 14.  We will travel up on two Peter Pan buses Monday morning and return via Peter Pan Friday afternoon.  We are excited to be at Silver Bay enjoying late summer at this beautiful facility.  I encourage you to explore the web site to learn more about what we consider to be a fabulous educational experience for your child.

We will have some forms that need to be filled out when you register your child for the new school year on Friday, August 24.  You will also receive a suggested packing/equipment list, a sample basic schedule, and a sample of special interest programming published by Nature's Classroom.

We will also have a Nature's Classroom representative on campus Tuesday evening, August 28, at 6:00 PM to provide you with more information about Nature's Classroom and to address any questions or concerns you may have before you send your child to a week long program at Silver Bay.

Registration on 8/24 takes place from 8:30 - 10:00 AM.  Our students will remain on campus following registration to participate in our orientation and parents are invited back to campus to a Parent Reception with our Head of School, Rodney LaBrecque, at 3:00 PM, and can then, following the reception,  pick up their child.  The school year quickly unfolds after Friday with an All School Picnic you and your family are invited to attend on Saturday, August 25 at 5:30 PM on Main Street by the flagpole.

All new students are required to participate in our Matriculation Ceremony on Sunday evening, August 26 from 5:30-6:30 PM in our Alumni Memorial Chapel and the all school Convocation with all students in attendance follows that evening from 7:30-9:00 PM.  Both of these formal events associated with the opening of school are dress code events.

Classes begin on Monday morning, August 27.  There are no classes the following Monday (Labor Day) and the following week, we are off to Nature's Classroom.

One summer event that takes place before the school year begins is our annual Ice Cream Social.  All middle school families are invited to our Campus Center Tuesday evening, August 21, to meet and greet our new families, reconnect with returning students and families, and enjoy some ice cream.  Ice Cream will be scooped from 6:00-8:00 PM with loads of yummy toppings available.

I'll leave you with the vision of a mountain of ice cream covered by some gooey syrup, and topped off with something crunchy and chewy.  Once you have that creation if front of you on the 21st, spoon in hand, you'll know the school year is about to begin.

Have a great weekend!
