Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
Houses and schools are similar in many ways. Both provide space for solace, nourishment and growth, and both are built within, and are shaped by, the architectural and cultural standards of a particular time and place. The longer these structures stand, the more time tests their strength. Even those built on the strongest foundations require reappraisal, repairs and renovations in order to endure.
This is particularly true of schools, which are home to more generations of much larger families than houses. Schools need to do more than maintain campus buildings and employ knowledgeable and caring teachers. They also need to examine their history and address the unhealthy attitudes and practices embedded within the stones of their foundations, and the faulty cultural wiring within their walls. They must work to eliminate those structural deficiencies that make their house less than a home.
Wilbraham & Monson Academy recognizes the time has come for candid reappraisal, genuine repairs and improvements, fostering a healthy and safe home for all members of our family. This home embraces diversity of race, gender, age, ability/disability, ethnicity, religion, nationality, family structure, sexual orientation, socioeconomic class, and gender identity and expression, as well as other characteristics that contribute to each person’s full identity.
For these reasons, WMA has founded the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Team. This team is made up of faculty, staff and administrators from various backgrounds and experiences, all of whom are committed to positive and inclusive change.
