Nous aimons notre français à la Wilbraham & Monson Academy.
Thirteen students in WMA French courses received a Global Seal of Biliteracy based on their respective scores from an exam taken in the Spring of 2024.
Two students – Emma Landry ’25 and Sally Geoghegan ’24 – earned the Working Fluency Award, the highest honor possible.
Quotes from Madame Dubois, WMA World Languages Chair
On 13 students winning awards: “Students were tested not on their knowledge of grammar, but on their skills (reading, listening, speaking and writing). Some students received the highest score in reading and listening, which corresponds to the level Advanced High. This was very rewarding for me to see.”
On why she wanted students to participate: “The Global Seal is an accolade that can be very useful to our students when they apply for internships, college or jobs. It's a certificate of proficiency that is internationally recognized. To get the seal, students take the AP test or the AVANT test, which is a computer adaptive test that I proctor at school. Students are then informed of where they are with each language skill, and they are given suggestions on how they can improve. And, this serves as their final exam. It's a win-win.”
On how students benefit from learning a foreign language: “There are so many benefits. First, learning languages helps you with standardized tests: it enhances your ability to think. Second, as a college or job applicant, you stand out because you speak another language. Employers are looking for people with language skills. Third, when you speak another language, you have the ability to understand other cultures with more depth, and you can connect and communicate with so many more people.”
