3 Baseball players commit to college

The Wilbraham & Monson Academy Baseball program had plenty to celebrate about last week.

The Titans hope to celebrate a lot on the field this season, too.

Three players - pitcher Maddox Legendre ’26, shortstop Jack Abel ’26 and catcher Nick Burns ’26 - committed to their respective colleges during a ceremony at the WMA Athletic Center on Feb. 12.

Maddox (Nichols College), Jack (Colby) and Nick (Southern Maine) will play next season for Division III teams in New England.

"I’m so proud I got to be part of (the) signing event,” Coach Jamie Gouin said. “Seeing our players celebrate all their hard work and dedication was awesome. They’ve put in so much to get to this point, and it was great to be there for them. Moments like that remind me why I love coaching baseball and this community."

Below are comments from all three players:

Maddox on how WMA helped him get to the next level: “Coach Gouin has helped me (with) recruiting. He was doing so much for me. On the baseball recruiting side, that definitely helped the most as well as WMA in general. The community is great. It’s going to prepare me for college. I get to live with all my friends. The teachers … it’s just incredible. (Strength & Conditioning Coach) Emily (Nitzsche) in concentration has helped me with the strength and conditioning portion, and I think that will help me in college.”

Maddox on why he was interested in Nichols: “What drew me to Nichols most of all was the fact that they showed so much interest in me to play. They showed so much interest in me, and I did more research and I found my home. The Sports Management major that I’m going to be doing, I’ve known that I’ve wanted to do that for a long time. They have such a great program there. Honestly, that’s 50-50 to baseball. At least I will have that great Sports Management degree.”

Jack on how WMA guided him during the college process as a postgraduate: “As soon as I said I was coming to WMA, Coach Gouin was on the phone with me almost every day, talking about what colleges I’m interested in and helping me reach out to coaches. I really appreciate that. WMA itself, as soon as I got on campus, it felt like a warm welcome. I adapted here easily. The community has great support. (Strength & Conditioning) Coach Emily (Nitzsche) and the concentration really helped me get stronger in the offseason, and it’s going to help prepare me for the baseball season.”

Jack on what drew him to Colby: "As soon as I stepped on Colby’s campus, (it was) beautiful. Coach (Jesse) Woods supported me throughout this and really praised me. I felt it was the right fit there. The prestige of the program and what Coach Woods’ background looks like, I think I’m going to love playing baseball there.”

Nick, a postgraduate, on how he benefitted from the Academy: “WMA has made it super easy. In the fall, we had our concentration program. It set me up perfect to go into hockey season and, throughout all of it, it’s left me time to play baseball. Coach Gouin has always been checking in, making phone calls, going to practices, throwing, doing all of the little things that has to get done in the offseason. WMA’s been a perfect place; perfect home - not even to do with baseball, but living here and getting a feel for what dorm life is going to be at college. It’s a huge experience for me.”

Nick on what attracted him to Southern Maine: “It seemed like a hardworking and hard place to play. I felt like the kids are just like my style - they like to play baseball and be there.”

WMA opens its exhibition schedule with three games in Vero Beach, Florida, the week of March 9.
