#3 WMA to host Class AA quarterfinal

Rematch.

The Wilbraham & Monson Academy Girls Basketball team will host Austin Prep Wednesday, March 5, in a New England Prep School Athletic Council Class AA quarterfinal at Greenhalgh Gymnasium at 4 p.m.

The teams met on Jan. 15 in Reading, Massachusetts, with host Austin Prep winning 60-55.

The Titans earned the #3 seed in this year’s tournament, going 20-9 overall, 18-8 vs. NEPSAC programs and 10-3 in Class AA. The Academy has won 11 of its last 13 games, including a 74-66 victory against archrival Suffield Academy in the regular-season finale.

“I think we are playing well,” Coach Durelle Brown said. “We just closed out the season defeating the #1 seed in the Class B tournament and archrival Suffield Academy here at home, where we had four players score in double figures. I think what is also good about us right now is that things are starting to make sense, and as we continue to improve, they are becoming hungry for more as a collective unit.”

Hungry, just like last year when WMA won the Class C title for the first time in school history before making the big jump to Class AA for the 2024-25 campaign.

“To move up three classes from Class C last year to Class AA this year, and be in the Class AA tournament as a #3 seed in Year One is big for us,” explained Coach Brown. “We have also learned strong, harsh lessons this season. We were the #1 seed a few different times in the last two months, but losing key games hurt us. The hope is that we have learned from those tough experiences of self-inflicted sabotage. So, we will take those lessons with us to the Class AA tournament, play possession by possession, quarter by quarter, looking to play mature, tough, locked-in WMA Girls Hoops basketball.

This is the third consecutive season the Titans have won 20 games prior to the postseason. Also, of the 109 teams in the entire NEPSAC, the Academy ranked #14.

“Our strength is definitely our depth,” Coach Brown stated. “We are led by an awesome senior (Hannah Grudzien ’25), and two of New England's top juniors (Caterina Ravosa ’26 and Selah Prignano ’26), but our strength is in our 11. On any given day, any significant number of them will shine in a quarter, half or even game. They constantly look to pick each other up, as well as look to challenge each other to do their individual job to the best of their ability through their play. And when someone may not have it, the next one up does not hesitate to step up in a big moment. They are truly a band of sisters who support each other and only care about the name on the front of our jersey.”
