4 players sign to play lacrosse in college

Despite the first game of 2022 still being four months away, there’s already been plenty to celebrate this season for the Wilbraham & Monson Academy Boys’ Lacrosse team.

Following a pair of Division I National Letter of Intent signings, four members of the senior class committed to play lacrosse at the next level during a college signing event Dec. 8.

With WMA Coach Mike MacDonald proudly looking on, Brendan Herbert ’22 (Wingate University), Dylan Quigley ’22 (Southern New Hampshire University), Jacob Smith ’22 (Franklin Pierce University) and Evan Grobsmith (Utica College) signed their letters to play at their respective colleges next season.

Richie Joseph ’22 (Providence College) and Will Hardy ’22 (Jacksonville University) signed NLI’s in November.

Quotes

Coach MacDonald regarding the four-member college signing event: “I am so proud of Brendan, Dylan, Jacob and Evan. They have meant so much to the longevity of the lacrosse program and the WMA community. They have all matured as student-athletes and we are excited to see them compete as a team this spring.”

Brendan regarding signing to play college lacrosse: “Signing Day was great. I was so happy to sit up there with three of my brothers. What attracted me to Wingate University is the beautiful campus. It’s also warm down there in North Carolina. The lacrosse program is one of the top in Division II, finishing fourth last year. WMA has helped a ton throughout during my dream of playing college lacrosse. It’s helped me in the classroom, on the field and just to better myself as a person.”

Dylan on what drew him to SNHU: “Southern New Hampshire University really caught my eye when I first arrived for my visit. I really like the newer look compared to the older style that many other colleges had. Coach Paul Calkins, the head lacrosse coach, attracted me as well. When I played at the prospect camp, I really enjoyed his coaching techniques and style.”

Jacob on what attracted him to Franklin Pierce: “I signed at Franklin Pierce because of the level of education I can receive. Also, the campus is absolutely beautiful. The coaches were very warm and inviting and welcoming on my prospect day, and I felt like they really cared and wanted me to come and contribute to their program. In addition, the lacrosse is pretty good.”

Evan on the opportunity to attend Utica: “Utica has great academic and athletic facilities. It’s also only an hour away from my house so it’s just like being home.”
