5 WMA Football players receive honors

Five Wilbraham & Monson Academy Football players received postseason awards following a season that included a trip to the championship game.

Below is the list of award winners, including quotes from each player and Coach Vartabedian.

Owen Earle ’28 - All-NEPSAC, NE 8-Player Football All-League, finalist for Player of the Year: “My first year playing football at WMA went amazing. Playing quarterback is perfect for me because I see myself as a leader on an off the field. I like to be a loud voice on the field and make not only my self better but everyone around me, too. For me, it was one of the best experiences I’ve had.”

Quote from Coach Vartabedian regarding Owen: “Owen had a tremendous season as an explosive dual-threat quarterback, who took our team to another level with his athleticism and competitiveness. Owen led the team in both rushing (583 yards, 14 touchdowns) and passing (1,062 yards, 15 TDs). Under Owen's leadership, the offense averaged 44 points a game, while he also played defense (2 INTs), returned punts (two punt returns for TDs) and kickoffs, and was our holder for extra points and field goals.”

Patrick Dorunda ’26 - All-NEPSAC, NE 8-Player Football All-League: “This was, by far my, best season stats wise. I was fortunate enough to be captain this year, and it was a great group of guys to work with. It’s always fun getting out on the field with this team and going to work, and I wish it wasn’t over so soon. I’m proud of how far both the team and I’ve come in our development, and making it to the championship game was a great way to end it.”

Quote from Coach Vartabedian regarding Patrick: “Patrick had a major impact in every phase of the game all season long. He was our leading receiver with 39 receptions for 688 yards and 10 TDs, and also served as the backup quarterback. Defensively, Patrick was a strong tackler, defended the pass very well and converted two fumble recoveries into touchdowns. We were fortunate to have someone of his caliber as a kicker and punter, as he put most kickoffs through the end zone, changed the field with his long punts, and was automatic on extra points and field goals. As a captain, Patrick led by example with his strong work ethic and dedication to getting better every day.”

Ethan Carreiro ’27 - All-NEPSAC Honorable Mention, NE 8-Player Football All-League Honorable Mention: “Winning both All-NEPSAC Honorable mention and All-New England Honorable Mention is an awesome feeling. All season, I felt on fire, tearing apart opposing team’s offenses. Every game I went out there like it was my last and gave it my all for the team, and I'm glad it was with the group of guys we had.”

Quote from Coach Vartabedian regarding Ethan: “Ethan set the tone for our guys (on the line) on both the offensive and defensive front. He was our most physical player, winning the Hammer Award for best hit of the week four times this season. Ethan is a very versatile player. Our run game relied on Ethan to lead the way with his physical blocking and ability to reach defenders on the edge, while his pass blocking was equally as impressive. Defensively, Ethan went full tilt each play, creating havoc in opposing backfields as both a middle linebacker and a defensive lineman, while finishing at or near the top of our team in terms of tackles, TFLs (tackles for loss), forced fumbles, quarterback pressures and sacks.”

Freddie Shubrick ’27 - All-NEPSAC Honorable Mention: “For my first football season, I didn’t expect to accomplish much, but I was surprised to receive All-NEPSAC Honorable Mention. I believe I performed well in my first year and learned a great deal. I’m ready to build on that success next season.”

Quote from Coach Vartabedian regarding Freddie: “Freddie had a terrific first year playing football. He was extremely reliable, tough and hard working, showing tremendous improvement throughout the season. Freddie finished the season as one of our most reliable and physical tacklers on defense, and covered the opposing team's best receiver most games. Offensively, he played both wide receiver and running back, using his speed and downhill running style to make a lot of big plays. Freddie scored 10 touchdowns and averaged 13.5 yards per rush. I am most impressed with Freddie's reliability and ability to play at a high level for four quarters each and every week.”

Jack Garvey ’27 - New England 8-Player Football All-League Honorable Mention: “My season went really well individually. As a linebacker and tight end, I showed I could make an impact on both sides of the ball. I was able to score on offense, showing I was a reliable option for Owen. On defense, I consistently recorded double-digit tackles each game and took a leadership role of playing the single linebacker, commanding the guys in front of me on the defensive line and relaying what our defense was doing. Overall, I feel like I grew a lot as a player and showed that I can step up when my team needs me.”

Quote from Coach Vartabedian regarding Jack: “Jack really stepped up this year as a junior to be a standout player on both offense and defense. On offense, he showed a lot of versatility as one of our top run blockers, as well as a sure-handed receiver who came up with big catches against Frederick Gunn both times we played. Jack really came on as a linebacker on defense as well, and excelled at blitzing the quarterback and hitting receivers if they crossed over the middle.”
