Girls Tennis dominates Suffield Invitational

The Wilbraham & Monson Academy Girls Tennis team was very good all spring, finishing the regular season 10-3.

And then came the Titans’ finale, where they were not very good – they were great.

WMA completely dominated the Suffield Invitational, reaching the championship match in all four divisions, winning three.

The team title was the best way to send off Coach Jay Hamilton, who announced his retirement during the season after serving as head coach for 22 years. It was Coach Hamilton’s first time winning the team championship at the Suffield Invitational.

Romy Allen-Schubert ’27 and Emma Landry ’25 won the #1 and #2 singles tiles, and the duo of Kendall Schechterle ’28 and Jessie Wang ’29 claimed the #1 doubles championships. Malena Donovan ’25 and Celia Hanson ’26 made it to the final in #2 doubles.

Additionally, Emma finished her six-year career on varsity with 53 wins as a Titan.

Quotes

Emma on winning the #2 singles title: “Winning my singles championship match at the Suffield Invitational alongside my reassuring teammates and coaches was very memorable. I would not have remained that patient and focused without them, so it is a success that I attribute greatly to their encouragement.”

Emma on the team winning the Suffield Invitational for the first time in school history: “It was truly amazing for our team to win the Suffield Invitational. The victories were reflective of our team's dedication and composure over the course of the season, along with the enthusiastic and unwavering support of our coaches. Having all of our singles and doubles competitors in the championship matches was remarkable, and I was thrilled to end our strong season with such a positive experience.”

Emma on finishing her career with more than 50 wins: “Reaching 50-plus career wins as a Titan would have been unimaginable to me during my early seasons. As a middle schooler, I had so much admiration for the older players I competed with and against, and their poise and love for the game is something I try to replicate. I hope that along with my wins, I was able to impart these values to the younger players on our team.”

Romy regarding the Suffield Invitational: “What an unforgettable way to end the season. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine we’d dominate the Suffield Invitational the way we did. We left everything on the court - not just for ourselves, but for the seniors and for Coach Jay. We had a strong season, and I truly believed we could bring home one trophy, but I never expected us to claim the ultimate prize. I’m incredibly proud of our team and especially happy for Emma, who’s been by my side since sixth grade. Saying goodbye isn’t easy, but she’s finishing on a high note and she’s earned every bit of it. I’ll miss her, our amazing seniors, and of course, Coach Jay.”

Jessie on winning the #1 doubles title: “Winning 1st doubles with Kendall at the Suffield invitational was a very exciting moment for me. I am not a doubles player - I don't even practice doubles at all and this was only my third time playing doubles. This was also the first time I'd played with Kendall. I honestly wasn’t expecting us to win, which made it all the more special. It’s a day I’ll always remember, and I’m really proud that we could contribute to the team’s overall championship.”
