Jack Abel '26 voted league MVP

Postgraduate Jack Abel ’26 has known for a few months that he was going to be attending and playing baseball at Colby College in Waterville, Maine.

Before that, though, he had to play his one season at Wilbraham & Monson Academy - and what a season he had.

As voted by the head coaches in the league, Jack was named the Cleary Division Player of the Year in the Western New England Prep School Baseball League following his 2026 campaign.

“It’s a huge honor to be named Player of the Year, especially considering the level of talent in the league,” Jack said. “I see it as a reflection of the support from my family, coaches and teammates who pushed me every day. I’m really grateful and motivated to keep improving.”

“Jack had one of the best offensive seasons that I have seen in my 25-plus year  career of coaching baseball,” Coach Jamie Gouin added.

In 14 games, Jack batted .567 with an other worldly OPS (on-base plus slugging) percentage of 1.734, which included four doubles, two triples, a home run and 13 walks in 50 plate appearances.

“I’m really proud of the season I put together, especially my hitting and being able to consistently contribute offensively game in and game out for the team,” said Jack, a shortstop. “I felt confident at the plate and focused on staying disciplined each at bat. Defensively, I worked hard to be reliable for my team and make the routine and tough plays when our pitchers needed it.”

“What separated Jack all season long was not only his production, but also his competitiveness, leadership and relentless work ethic,” praised Coach Gouin. “Respected by teammates, coaches and opponents alike, he played the game with intensity and passion every time he stepped on the field.”

Jack made the most of his postgraduate year and feels fully prepared in all facets as he heads to one of the top academic schools in the country as well as a highly competitive baseball program.

“WMA pushed me to be more disciplined and balanced, both academically and athletically,” Jack said. “Coach Gouin and the coaches here emphasized accountability and teamwork, which helped me grow as a player. In the classroom, I learned how to manage my time better and stay focused under pressure.”

“Jack has been a leader since Day 1 with both younger and returning players,” Coach Gouin said. “He sets the example of what a Titan should be both on and off the field. He has a tremendous baseball IQ along with an outstanding work ethic. I am excited to see what he accomplishes at Colby College next spring.”
