Riflery undefeated for sixth-straight regular season

There have been two guarantees at Wilbraham & Monson Academy for the last six winters: students will want to be out of dress code the Thursday before February’s Long Weekend, and the Riflery team will go undefeated for the regular season.

Regarding the latter, Coach Bill Passy’s squad went 6-0 during head-to-head competition for the 2021-22 season, pushing its winning streak to 38 matches.

Wooseung “Colin” Oh ’22 was WMA’s best and most consistent shooter during the regular season, shooting between 189-191 in all five matches. Colin (190), Steven Holik ’22 (187), Askar Bakirdinov ’24 (187), Matt Clark ’24 (185) and Leopold Heiss ’24 (184) recorded the Titans’ top five averages.

The Titans will conclude their season with the Prep Gallery Match Feb. 16 and Connecticut High School Championships Feb. 23.

Quotes from Coach Passy:

- On the team going undefeated this season:

“After losing our top two shooters from last year (six in total), we weren't sure how this year would look. So, to have another undefeated league season is a bit of a surprise. We've gotten contributions from many different team members, which we needed. The team has worked hard and continues to improve.”

- On the team’s six-year winning streak:

“It's quite an incredible streak considering that a majority of those wins came against Suffield Academy and Xavier High School. Those two schools won all of the state championships from 2009-2016, just prior to our run of success. They say, ‘To be the best, you have to beat the best.’ I believe we've done that.”

- On the team’s biggest surprises this season:

“The biggest surprise this season has been the development of three first-year shooters - all sophomores - Leopold Heiss, Matt Clark and Askar Bakirdinov. They have each become integral parts of the team in a short period of time. We normally don't expect results like they're giving us in the first year. To get that immediate impact from three different kids is huge.”
