Adri Chechile '26 named MVP of track finale

Adri Chechile ’26 had already made her mark on the Wilbraham & Monson Academy track program prior to the final meet of her stellar career, with a few school records and a team title to her credit.

And then came her last meet of high school, where Adri not only set even more school records, but she may have had the best day of track & field in the history of the Academy.

Adri was named the Most Valuable Player of the meet after her performance at the New England Prep School Track Association Division III Championships at Marianapolis Prep in Connecticut on May 16.

“I was so excited to get MVP of the meet it was truly an amazing honor,” Adri said. “I had the goal of doing the best I could in each of my events, and after the 400, due to the heat, I was truly exhausted.

“However, my dad helped me hydrate and poured water on me while also trying to motivate me. Then when it was time for the 300 hurdles, I was able to bring my best and PR (personal record). Getting named MVP of the meet was an amazing way to finish my high school season, and I am so grateful for the support of our team.”

Against the best competition, Adri went a perfect 4 for 4 in her events, highlighted by a meet-record effort of 17 feet, 11.5 inches to win the long jump. The mark was also a school record, breaking her own set earlier this year.

“Setting the meet record in long jump was so exciting,” Adri explained. “Going in I was very nervous that I was not going to be able to keep up with jumping 17 feet, and there was a girl expected to only jump 17. I really focused on my visualization and my confidence going on. I also watched Olympic and Division I jumping beforehand which I think really helped my mental focus.”

The long jump, though, was just the beginning. She then teamed with Saniya Abdul-Ali ’31, Gabby Lovelace ’29 and Jala Witherspoon ’27 to win the 4x100-meter relay in 50.17, another school record. She followed that by winning and topping her school mark in the 400 with a 57.14. In her final event, crossed first in the 300 hurdles in 46.63, breaking the school record of 46.91, set by her sister, Arielle Chechile ’24.

“As the meet went along, and Adri was winning event after event, and setting record after record, coaches from all over New England were just coming up to all our WMA coaches and saying, ‘That girl is amazing. Wow! She needs to get Meet MVP,’” Coach Danielle Vartabedian praised.

“There was no lack of adoration for her as she flashed that happy smile and let all that happy energy flow. So when we gathered for the end of meet coaches meeting, we were hoping it would be a no brainer as we nominated her along with a few deserving others. When it came time for the vote, it was almost unanimous as the majority of the coaches from across New England happily raised their hands for Adri.”
