Riflery wins 50th match in a row

Wilbraham & Monson Academy’s Riflery team hit the big five-oh last week. No, not in regards to age, but in terms of consecutive wins.

Extending a streak that began eight seasons ago, the Titans won their 50th match in a row with a 956-934 victory against Xavier High School on Feb. 15.

Vivi Venkat ’25 (196 out of 200), Marisa Cyboron ’24 (195) and Julia Choi ’26 (192) led WMA with impressive scores. Arzum Li ’24 (189), Yejun Lee ’27 (184) rounded out the top five and helped the Titans record their highest total of the season.

The victory clinched the eighth-straight Quinnipiac Conference title for Coach Bill Passy and the Titans.

“We are at a point now that the kids know that winning is an expectation within the program,” Coach Passy said. “This group worked hard to make sure that they would not be the team to see the streak end.

“Good grief (eight years is) a long time. To think back before the run started, the program had only won a few matches over a span of 20 years. Now to think we haven't lost a league match in eight years, it's hard to comprehend. We've had many good kids come through the range over the last eight years. I'm thankful for all of them.”

The Titans picked a great time to have their best match of the season, especially since Xavier had posted some rock-solid scores headed into the contest.

“It was our best score of the season by 19 points, and it came at a great time,” Coach Passy explained. “Xavier had shot several scores this season higher than our previous season high. The kids knew they needed a strong performance and boy, did they come through. I think they liked the underdog role.”
