Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Policy
Student Device Requirements for Academic Use
Our school supports a Bring Your Own Device program to empower students with the tools they need for academic success. As a Google for Education institution, students have access to Google Workspace including Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Slides. The following outlines device requirements by division.
Upper School — Required: Windows or Mac Computer
Upper School students are required to bring a Windows or Mac laptop. This requirement is driven by standardized testing mandates from the College Board, whose Bluebook exam application is used for AP Exams, the PSAT, and the SAT.
Accepted devices:
Devices not accepted for Upper School:
- Chromebooks — not supported by the College Board Bluebook app
- iPads and tablets
- Cell phones, Kindles, Nooks, or other mobile devices
Important: The College Board requires a Windows or Mac device for all digital standardized tests, including AP Exams, PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, and the SAT. Personal Chromebooks are explicitly excluded. All Upper School students enrolled in AP courses or taking the PSAT/SAT must have a compatible device.
Middle School — Recommended: Windows or Mac; Chromebooks Conditionally Permitted
Middle School students are strongly encouraged to bring a Windows or Mac laptop. We recognize that Chromebooks offer an affordable option, and they are permitted for Middle School use provided they meet all of the conditions below.
Conditions for Chromebook use in Middle School:
- The Chromebook must be running the latest version of ChromeOS and receive automatic security updates.
- Chromebooks that have reached their Auto Update Expiration (AUE) date and can no longer receive ChromeOS updates are not permitted.
- The device must be able to run the Chrome browser and access all required Google Workspace and school applications.
- The device must connect reliably to the school's Wi-Fi network.
All Students — General Requirements
- Devices must have the Chrome browser installed for web-based applications
- Wi-Fi connectivity is required; Ethernet is also available in dormitories
- Google Workspace for Education (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides) is provided by the school
- Assignments and communications are managed through Canvas and PowerSchool
- Printing is available through PaperCut Printing
Devices Not Permitted on the School Network
- Wireless routers, access points, or network switches
- Smart TVs
- Smart home devices (Amazon Echo, Google Home, Apple HomePod, etc.)
