Bao Giang "Cindy" Doan '24 wins National Geographic Bee
Wilbraham & Monson Academy’s Bao Giang “Cindy” Doan ’24 took the school wide National Geography Bee at the Middle School seriously, and it showed.
Cindy won the competition Jan. 27 with a perfect score, advancing her to the state qualifying round. The top 100 from that phase advance to the state competition, which will be held in late March.
Sally Geoghegan ’24 was the school’s runner-up, while Ben Presz ’25 and Gabe Dziura ’24 tied for third place.
Ten Middle School students prepared for the competition by participating in the school’s GeoBee/Model United Nations after-school activity, which was run by Mme. Fabienne Dubois.
Cindy on winning the school contest: “It was unexpected. There were other good contenders so it was surprising. I didn’t think I’d actually win. For some of the questions I didn’t know what the question was asking so I guessed.”
Madame Dubois on Cindy’s achievement: “Cindy's performance was exceptional. She had a perfect score on the school-wide GeoBee. Cindy was always engaged during our afternoon activity. She used her time well and developed great study skills.”
Madame Dubois on why it’s important to offer the GeoBee: “We started the GeoBee last year in the Middle School because we thought it was very important to inspire students to learn about the world and to be curious about places beyond their own community. The skills and knowledge they are getting through this competition will help them in the Upper School, in college and beyond. Students in the afternoon activity had fun practicing with different games and an interactive website.”
Note: The GeoBee/Model UN group will participate in the state’s Model UN Conference at Northeastern University on Feb. 28 before touring the United Nations in New York City March 4.
