Ava Aguiar '23 wins Cheshire Invitational
Three, two, one, blast off for Wilbraham & Monson Academy’s Ava Aguiar ’23.
After placing third and second at invitationals this cross country season, Ava pushed the last mile en route to winning the Cheshire Invitational Oct. 2 in Connecticut.
Ava’s personal-record time of 19 minutes, 28 seconds on the 5K course easily topped the field of 50-plus competitors. It was Ava’s first career win at an invitational.
Ava and her WMA teammates host Cheshire in a dual meet Saturday, Oct. 9, at 1 p.m.
Ava on the race: “I started out pretty fast and was first for a while. Then this girl from the Wooster School took the lead. I followed her pace. When she started to slow down, I saw it as my chance and I took the lead.”
Ava on winning: “It felt great. I had done third and second at the other invitationals so it’s nice to have that three, two, one and finally win.”
Ava on the remainder of the season: “I’m grateful for our coaches and everything they’ve done for me, and for my team and how we push each other. We’re all working toward some good goals. I’m hoping to break 19 (minutes).”
Coach Danielle Vartabedian on Ava’s performance at Cheshire: “She enjoyed the fact there was a hill she could fly up. She loved that. She was the first one in by minutes. The finish was on an uphill for about a quarter-mile and she came flying up that hill all smiles.”
