Boys Rugby vs. Worcester Rugby Football Club
Event Type: Regular
Date: March 31, 2012
Score:32 - 10
Event Recap:
The Titan Rugby team began its season on a brisk March day, with a 32-10 victory over Worcester Spartans U-19s in front of a nice crowd at Hugh Harrell field. HS Jung opened the scoring 7 minutes in with a 40- meter penalty kick. The Titans had numerous chances over the next 15 minutes, but could not put more than two or three phases together before knocking on, or making a mistake around the ruck. About 30 minutes into the first half, Ollie Chen picked the ball out of a ruck and went weakside from about 30 meters out with support from HS; Ollie muscled the ball in for the first try, but the Titans missed the conversion to go up 10-0. Just before the half. Flanker Max Rankin made a break weakside after Jack Viens had chased down a long kick and won the ball 50 meters down field; this time HS received the ball from Rankin and went around everyone from 35 meters, touching down between the posts. McLarney converted the try, and the Titans went into the half up 15-0. In the second half, the Titans scored three more tries; the first by Desmond Gray off of a penalty play with McLarney converting again. The next time it was winger  Nuno Van-Dunem, who chased down a kick from Buun Tengamnuay. Finally, the last Titan try was scored by McLarney off of a nice move with scrumhalf Takaaki Kagami but the conversion was missed. Worceste,r to their credit, played hard to the end and scored two tries in the last five minutes of the match, both on long runs. Final score Titans 32, Worcester 10. The Titan man of the match was fullback Buun Tengamnuay, who besides setting up a try, made several try saving tackles and took away any advantage Worcester might have achieved in the kicking game by running everything down and counterattacking. After the first match, the Titans B side played a close match with Worcester Bs, going up 14-0 on tries by Steven Shen and Evan Qiao. Josh Slater and Ralph Lee each slotted a conversion kick. But Worcester came back with four tries (none converted) to win the B-side match 20-14.
