Upper School - Required Summer Reading

*All Upper School students are required to read two books - the all-school read and a book related to their upcoming English class - during the summer.

1. All Community Read

Dear WMA Community,

The values of our motto - "Live Clean, Speak True, Work Hard, Play Fair" - are so essential to our community, and we will use them as a framework for community living and programming, such as summer reading, all-school speakers and presentations.

“Speak True” is the theme for the 2019-2020 academic year, and the summer reading program will help jumpstart our discussion as to what this means. We encourage all parents and families to read with your student this summer. We hope this reading experience sparks conversation and helps us think about what it means to speak true personally and as a community.

The all-school read for this summer is:

"I Am Malala" by Malala Yousafzai

We will have thematic discussions when we return in the fall in all CEGS and World Languages classes, and students will be assessed.

So as you go off to enjoy your summer holidays, think about how you define and articulate the ideal of speaking true, and bring back your ideas and thoughts to school in August.

Don't forget to check for your assigned English summer read and AP coursework for the summer.

Happy reading!

2. English Class Summer Read

Students in Grades 9 through postgraduate must read additional texts selected by the English Department for the English course in which students are enrolled next fall. Testing/class discussion on this book will take place within the English course.

Please note, students must annotate texts for English reading.
